VO: (I was about to leave the window) Enjoy New York! Me: Thank you, good day! VO: (Smiling) Good day too! Advice for VISA Applicants: US Embassy is a high security place. The secure environment may make you a little nervous. However, don’t lose your poise. It’s regrettable that you might have to stand in the queue outside under the burning sun for long time. But inside the embassy, they arranged everything for your comfort. You don’t have to stand anywhere inside. they will make you seated instead of standing. There is drinking water and washroom. You will be talking to the consular officer over microphone, he/she will communicate with you in the same you. You can see him/her across a glass window. There’s a tiny space underneath the glass window through which you will be able to pass your documents. These unfamiliar steps may make you a little uncomfortable. However, they are very willing to issue you a visa. If you have got admission in a university, be 90% sure that you are getting your visa. The interview is just about talking with you in English for a few seconds. They are also very busy, they try to talk as less as possible. Good luck successors!

I: I said with smile in my face that i know about the extreme weather conditions. (Meanwhile she was talking with an African American Lady with curly hair who was standing behind the VO)

Advice for upcoming aspirants: Be confident and have a conversation. Don’t memorize anything. Be bold and always maintain a eye contact. Don’t rush for anything and don’t pass your documents without being asked. Dress in a decent manner. There is not much one can do in the day of interview. But if you have a funding(full/partial) and you are confident it is likely that you will come out with a visa.

Interview Time: 8.00 AM Reached Embassy : 7.10AM Entered Embassy : 8.15AM Interviewed At : 8.40Am Status: Approved Counter No. : 09 (Male, American, Has beard, Neutral Expression)
Visa approved/rejected before me: Rejected Two consecutive applicant (One F1-Probably self funded, One J1)
VO: Pass your pasport & I20 Me: Good morning (passed) VO: Why do you want to go to UTA? Me: Because it’s one…. VO: Could you please say a little louder.
Me: Sure. It is one of the leading university in Machine Learning research. When i googled, I found one professor who works in that area. I liked his work very much and wanted to work with him, so i applied.
VO: (Looks at something in his monitor and then in my I 20) How will you pay for your study?
Me: (This question gave me a mild stroke as i had scholarship and hadn’t taken any financial document with me) I have a Teaching Assistant-ship for 9 month. After that they will renew the offer based on my performance. (I think he didn’t pay attention to the last part of my 2nd sentence)
VO: (Seems satisfied) Ok, i am keeping your passport. Your visa is approved. You can take it after 5 days.
Me: Thank you very much. VO: Have a good day.
NOTE: 1.Confidence is the key. Try practicing a bit cause it sound’s really easy when you are in your home. But when you see the VO rejecting two consecutive visa applicant, your heart starts beating fast and your knee starts shaking.
2. Why do you want to go? The most important question. If you have anything other than study in your head, get rid of it. And try to be creative when answering this question. All the VO’s are familiar with typical answers. Probably they hear it 50 times everyday. So make your own reason.
3. What will you do after completing graduation? Another impotent question, though i was not asked about it. Whatever you do never give a impression that you are willing to settle there. If you can avoid the word ‘settle’ altogether.
4. Try to be truthful as far as you can. They can sense if you telling lies or trying to hide something.

Physical Description of the Consular Officer: Chinese/Korean American young lady. Number of Visa Approved/Rejected before My Interview: Approved a family.
The Interview-
Me and the VO (at the same time, smiling): Good Morning! VO: Pleae pass your passport and I-20. Me: Passed VO: So, you are going to the University of Southern Mississippi. What are you going to study there? Me (with a very fast beating heart): Master of Science in Economic Development. (VO started typing on the keyboard) VO (looking at my I-20): It says you have got an assistantship; is it a teaching one or a research assistantship ? Me: Yes, its a research assistantship. VO (looking again into the I-20): The assistantship covers most of the costs, so who is going to pay for the rest ? Me: My father. VO (looking me into the eyes): What does he do? Me (with much normal heart pumping and improved confidence) : He lives in Saudi Arabia, working as a production supervisor for a private company. (She started typing again) VO: Continued typing for about 25-30 seconds. VO (looking at me): Whats your plan after completing the program? Me: I would like to return to Bangladesh and start working for either a government or a private organization dealing with economic development in Bangladesh. (VO keeps on typing) VO: Puts my passport on the side table, returns my I-20 and says: “ You can’t get your passport today but hopefully you will be able to pick it up in 2-3 days”. Me: I am going to pick it up from Sylhet, right ? VO (looking on the sticker posted on the back of my passport): Yes. Me (with a smile): Thank you. VO (smile): Have a nice trip !
Advice for VISA Applicants: Fill up all documents truthfully and accurately. Answer all the questions correctly and with confidence ( I know it starts with a fast beating heart, but gets better when the I-20 starts talking silently). If you are largely self funded, do explain your source clearly and accurately. VOs are not intersted in going through your documents, they want to believe in your verbal affirmation. From my experience, I do believe that VOs really want to issue a visa. So again, explain everything clearly. Best of luck to all interviewees.

Advice for upcoming aspirants:
First of All, try not to bring your Mobile phone, pendrive etc. or any closed envelop. They almost tear off my documents while checking. I was stopped twice ; First, while entering into the gate i was sent back for mobile phone and Second time at body scanning time they found a pendrive in my wallet which I had lost quite a few days back. Do not try to convince the VO desperately, I saw one couple was rejected and the Bengali girl besides the VO was telling that you guyz are so desperate to enter at USA, we can not approve your VISA. And finally, if anything unexpected happens to you before entering , don’t loose hope, the guards wont approve your VISA, though they will pretend something like that. Best of Luck.

(The VO just indicated the blue ticket)
Me: Thank you very much sir!
(He was typing during the whole conversation)
Advice for upcoming aspirants:
If you are full funded, you don’t have to worry. If you are partially funded like me and you can convince the VO that you and your family are solvent enough, you don’t have to worry either. But be careful to prepare the financial documents and bring that to the consulate anyway. If you are self funded, then I am sorry to say that I don’t know about that situation much. See what others are doing around you and be yourself in front of the VO. Best of luck.

I have a case which is rather unusual. I am eligible to Immigrant visa as my maternal uncle applied for an Immigrant petition for my mother about 12 years ago and we received the welcome letter last year. But due to some problems we are not interested to take the opportunity yet. That is why I am not waiting for the immigrant visa and applied for student visa. Also, I have been awarded GA, but had to show 4000$.

IELTS: 7.5 (L-8.5, R-7.5, W-7.0, S-6.5)
Publication: No publication, even did not get the chance to do thesis
Job experience: Nearly 1.5 years
Accepted and rejected Universities:
I started proceedings For Fall-16 in January. I did not know the necessary information then like how to apply, how to send docs, admission deadlines (which end wihtin January for most of the universities). I did not contact any professors. So, I end up applying to only 3 universities for MS. Even I did not like the 2 of the programs but applied because I had to. The universities are Texas A&M University-College Station, Oklahoma State University and East Carolina University. But did not get admission in any one of them.
Then I started to mail professors and this time for PhD, as I learned that it is comparatively easy to get funds in PhD. I applied to University of Alabama-Huntsville and Clemson University for Spring-17 and got admission and assistantship in both of them. Also some other professors took interview and ensured me funding. They are from following universities: In Spring-17-University of Arkansas-Fayetteville, University of Missouri-Saint Louise, Florida International University & Indiana State University. In Fall-17- University of Georgia, University of South Florida, University of North Carolina-Charlotte & University of Toledo The universities of Fall-17 are very good. But I have to start PhD as soon as possible for personal reasons so I choose University of Alabama-Huntsville. The deadline for UAH and Clemson was earlier. And after getting both admission and assistantship in UAH, I did not apply to any other

I: Good morning.
VO: Please give me your passport
I: (passed passport).
VO: I20
I: (passed I-20)
VO: (Looked at my I-20 and started typing)
VO: How old are you?
I: (Told)
VO: Well, why are you going to USA?
I: To pursue Ph.D. in Biotechnology and Engineering in University of Alabama in Huntsville.
VO: (Kept typing for a long time) What kind of research are you going to do there?
I: Development of antimicrobial agents and alternatives of antibiotics.
VO: (Gave a WOW kind of look and a smile) Well, it IS an important thing!
I: (Smiled back) Yes sir.
VO: (Again typing)
VO: From where did you complete your under-graduation?
I: I have completed both under-graduation and Masters from University of Chittagong in Microbiology.
VO: (Typing, typing, typing…) (After few moments, he halted looking at the computer. He was smiling until that moment. Now, he looked to me with a serious face)
VO: Has anyone ever applied an immigrant petition on your behalf?
I: (In the DS-160, applicants have to give answers to the following question. At first, I was not sure what to do. I asked a lot of people about it. Get mixed kind of replys. Considering everything, I gave the answer yes. Probably VO was wathcing my DS-160 and saw the answer) My maternal uncle did that for my mother in 2003, my name was submitted as her accompany as I was below 21 years old. We received the welcome letter last year, but my mother has not paid the IV fees or completed the DS-260 form yet as she is not interested.
VO: How come?
I: (I came up with a cause which I made earlier) (At that point a dangerous looking suited-booted huge American came behind him and said something. VO went couple of steps towards him and talked with him for a few sec.)
VO: If your mother applies for immigration visa now, would you be eligible? I: (I did not understand the question completely but replied) Yes, my name is present in the CEAC.
VO: (Looked confused. Then, he went to the dangerous looking person and discussed what to do for a long time, probably 3 min., then came with nodding. He took a piece of paper, started to write our case number)
VO: Please wait for a while.
I: Of course, no problem
(I guess, you can understand what was going through my mind then. But fortunately, I kept my composure through the interview. I was waiting and after a decade (actually 10 min had been passed, but seemed to me like a decade), my name was called.)
VO: You are eligible for immigrant visa, but your mom does not want to take the opportunity, are you sure about that?
I: Yes, sir. (I was thinking like, just give me the student visa at first, then I would tell you what we really want…..)
VO: Just to let you know, if you want to change your visa status, you have to go through a lot of processing.
I: OK. (I sensed that HE IS GOING TO GIVE ME THE VISA!)
VO: What are you going to do after returning to Bangladesh?
I: (Told a well rehearsed story)
VO: (Placed my passport to a side box and gave me my I-20 and the blue paper where ‘Apnar visa onumodon kora hoyeche’ is written and said nothing)
I: Have I got the visa?
VO: Yes.
I: Thank you then. When will I get my passport back?
VO: 5 days. It is written in the paper.
I: Thank you. (Walked away as quickly as I can so that he can’t call me back)
Passport pickup date: 03-11-2016.
Advice for upcoming aspirants: It is hard to do during interview, but be positive; always show them that you are confident even you are not inside. Do not panic if you face critical questions, try to answer them confidently. Make your answers ready if you think you would face those. And I think it does not depend upon the nature of VO. They just follow the procedure. I saw every VO approved some as well as rejected some others.

VO: Good Morning. Pass me your passport.
I: Passed it & VO scanned it.
VO: Where do you want to go in USA?
I: Mississippi.
VO: (She noticed that I was holding my I-20) Give your document please.
I: Passed both I-20 and DS-160 confirmation page.
VO: (Returning back my DS-160 form ) I don’t need this. Only I-20 please. So, when did you complete your MS?
I: I did not enroll in any MS program before. I got direct PhD admission offer.
VO: So what is your last degree?
I: B.Sc in Computer Science.
VO: When did you get that?
I: In 2014.
VO: What are you doing since then?
I: I have been working in Software companies since 2014.
VO: You are full-funded, right? (Looking at my I-20)
I: Yes.
VO: What will you do after completing the program?
I: I will return to Bangladesh and try to join my present company.
VO: Ok, I am approving your VISA. Please collect your passport after 5 days. (Then kept my passport, returned my I-20 and gave me a blue leaflet saying “Apnaar Visa Onumodon Hoyeche”).
I: Thank you Mam.
Advice for upcoming aspirants: Full-funded candidates can relax. I think VO just asks question for passing the time needed for checking DS-160 and other info. Partial/Self-funded candidates need to show confidence in their body language as well as in answering.
